Influenza (Flu): What to Expect and When to See a Doctor

Flu treatment, Ireland

What Is the Flu?

Influenza (commonly called the flu) is a contagious viral infection that affects the nose, throat, and lungs. It tends to spread quickly during the colder months in Ireland, especially from October to March.

Unlike a simple cold, the flu often comes on suddenly and can leave you feeling very unwell for several days.

Common Symptoms of the Flu

If you catch the flu, you might experience:

  • Sudden high temperature (usually 38°C or higher)
  • Body aches and muscle pain
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Headache
  • Sore throat or cough
  • Chills and sweats
  • Loss of appetite

Tip: Flu symptoms are generally stronger than those of a common cold. If you feel like you’ve been “hit by a bus,” it’s more likely the flu.

What to Expect at Home

For most people, the flu will improve with rest and self-care. Here are some steps to follow:

  • Rest: Give your body time to recover.
  • Hydrate: Drink water, warm teas, or clear soups to avoid dehydration.
  • Over-the-counter relief: Paracetamol or ibuprofen can help lower fever and ease aches.
  • Stay home: Avoid contact with others for at least 5 days to prevent spreading the virus.

When to See a Doctor

Most flu cases don’t require a GP visit, but sometimes medical care is necessary. Book an appointment or attend our out-of-hours clinic in Swords if you or your child has:

  • Flu symptoms that don’t improve after 5–7 days
  • Breathing difficulties, chest pain, or severe shortness of breath
  • Severe dehydration (very little urine, dizziness, confusion)
  • Very high fever that does not come down with paracetamol/ibuprofen
  • Symptoms in a child under 2 years old or an older adult over 65 years
  • Flu while pregnant or living with a chronic condition (asthma, diabetes, heart disease, weakened immune system)
